Skill, expertise and compassion

surgeryWhen your pet requires surgery, you can be confident that your companion is in experienced hands before, during and after the procedure.

Rockledge Veterinary Clinic has a fully-equipped on-site surgical suite, and our staff is experienced with a wide variety of surgeries, from routine spays and neuters to more complex procedures.

Safety starts before the surgery

Before we schedule any surgical procedure, we will perform a comprehensive pre-operative screening to determine that your pet is healthy enough for surgery.  This may include a physical examination, bloodwork and an echocardiogram, when necessary.

We monitor your pet throughout the procedure

Before the surgery, your pet will receive pre-anesthetic drugs to relax him or her and prevent pain. We will place an intravenous (IV) catheter to administer intravenous fluids, which help maintain blood pressure and prevent dehydration throughout the procedure.

We will tailor anesthetics to meet your pet’s unique needs. Throughout the procedure, our experienced staff carefully monitors your pet using state-of-the-art equipment. We monitor your pet’s heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen levels to make sure that he or she is stable. We also monitor your pet’s temperature and use heated blankets to keep him or her safe and comfortable.

We manage post-operative pain

Pain management is a very important part of our surgical protocol. We discharge patients with appropriate pain medicines to promote a comfortable and speedy recovery.

What to expectsurgery

When we schedule your pet for surgery, we will provide you with special instructions to prepare for the surgery.

We admit surgical patients between 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. When you bring your pet in, we will ask you to sign a surgery release form giving us permission to perform the procedure. We will also present the estimated charges for the procedure and ask you to sign this estimate. It’s important to understand that surgical prices can vary depending on the actual amount of time spent in surgery and the medications dispensed, so the final charges cannot be determined until after the procedure and may differ from the original estimate.

The actual time of your pet’s surgery may vary, depending on the procedure and other planned or unplanned surgeries that day. After the procedure, your pet will remain with us for several hours for monitoring. When your pet is able to walk and we have determined that he or she is stable, your pet will be discharged to your care. If your pet does require overnight care, we will make arrangements for overnight monitoring and possible transfer to a 24-hour facility.
