Nutritional Counseling
In the wake of the dramatic and very scary pet food recall,
it becomes clear that we all must be vigilant in knowing what we are dishing out each day. Because most pet food, as
well as our own, is produced and manufactured by large companies, contamination and lack of quality control is unfortunately an occasional occurrence. There are many ways in which we can feed our pets, from processed dry
and canned products, to home prepared, including cooked and raw foods. The quality of these products must be
closely scrutinized. We try to educate our clients to read
the label when selecting processed foods. Diets that contain by-products and/or preservatives such as BHA or BHT are unacceptable. The label should indicate that the diet has whole meat, such as beef, lamb, or chicken. Corn should
not be the first ingredient, but may be acceptable if it’s fourth or fifth on the list. Ideally, the diet should have whole grains or potatoes. Home prepared or raw diets must be balanced. Fortunately, there are many raw diets that are nutritionally complete and can be purchased frozen and already prepared.
We can direct you to stores that will have high quality foods or help you design a feeding plan of your own.
